The Dodge Charger is one of the few nameplates that currently refers to two completely different cars. Shopping for a used Charger at Daniel Paré Dodge Chrysler, you could be looking at a four-door sedan with a V6 or a V8, or at a new-generation liftback offered as a two-door coupe and as a sedan, first as a full electric and later with a turbocharged inline-six.
The rule is simple. A conventional four-door sedan with a separate trunk, model year 2016 through 2023, is the older Charger. Model year 2024 or newer is the new generation, recognizable by its liftback body and its much wider stance.
No model year is skipped between the two. The old sedan ends with 2023 and the new generation starts with 2024. They share no major mechanical hardware, which is the single most common source of confusion in classified listings.
This is the Charger most people picture. Four-door sedan, five seats, a 16.5 cubic foot trunk, or 467 litres, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic across the board. It was assembled in Brampton, Ontario, where production ended on December 22, 2023. That makes 2023 the final model year, and since the V8 sedan is no longer built, the used market is the only way to get one.
The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 anchors the lineup for the whole run, rated at 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft in standard form and up to 300 horsepower and 264 lb-ft with the performance group. It is the only engine that unlocks all-wheel drive.
The 5.7-litre HEMI V8 powers the R/T with 370 horsepower and 395 lb-ft from 2016 through 2023. The 6.4-litre HEMI V8, the famous 392, powers the Scat Pack 392 and SRT 392 with 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft, also across the full period.
The supercharged 6.2-litre V8 in the SRT Hellcat is rated at 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft from 2016 through 2020, then 717 horsepower and 650 lb-ft starting with 2021. The SRT Hellcat Redeye joins for model year 2021 with 797 horsepower and 707 lb-ft.
This is the most useful piece of information here for a buyer in Bellechasse, Beauce or on the South Shore. The Charger sedan was available with all-wheel drive throughout 2016 to 2023, but only with the 3.6-litre V6. No retail V8 version of this generation ever received all-wheel drive.
The trims involved changed over time: SE AWD and SXT AWD from 2016 through 2018, SXT AWD in 2019, then SXT AWD and GT AWD from 2020 through 2023.
The hardware is an automatic all-wheel-drive system with an active transfer case and a front-axle disconnect. When grip allows, the car runs as a pure rear-wheel drive and the front axle disengages, then the front wheels are brought back in the moment conditions deteriorate. That is what lets an AWD Charger be driven twelve months a year on Chaudière-Appalaches and Capitale-Nationale roads. Keep in mind that in Quebec, four compliant winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15.
From 2016 through 2018 the Canadian lineup covers SE, SE AWD, SXT, SXT AWD, R/T, R/T Road and Track, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat, with the Daytona and Daytona 392 names appearing for 2017. Model year 2019 brings a reshuffle: GT becomes the sporty rear-drive V6 version and the range tightens around SXT, SXT AWD, GT, R/T, Scat Pack 392 and SRT Hellcat. GT AWD arrives for 2020 and the SRT Hellcat Redeye for 2021.
To mark the end of production, Dodge created a run of special editions grouped under the Last Call banner. Three of them are Chargers, all model year 2023: the Super Bee, the Scat Pack Swinger and the King Daytona.
Uconnect comes with either a 7-inch or an 8.4-inch touchscreen depending on the trim. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrive with the fourth-generation Uconnect system and its 8.4-inch screen, as early as model year 2017. Driver assistance features offered over the years include forward collision warning with active braking, adaptive cruise control with full stop, LaneSense lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross path detection.
The new Charger is assembled at Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, so both generations share Canadian production.
It launches as a full electric, the Charger Daytona, in two-door coupe form for model year 2024. Two configurations were announced for Canada: the Daytona R/T at 496 horsepower and 404 lb-ft, and the Daytona Scat Pack at 670 horsepower and 627 lb-ft. Both use a 100.5 kilowatt-hour battery and standard all-wheel drive through two electric motors. Range figures announced for Canada are more than 510 kilometres for the R/T and 418 kilometres for the Scat Pack, with a 20 to 80 percent charge in roughly 24 minutes on a fast charger. The coupe carries over for 2025 and the Daytona sedan arrives for 2026.
Model year 2026 also brings gasoline power back, in the form of the 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six called SIXPACK: 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft in the R/T, 550 horsepower and 531 lb-ft in the Scat Pack. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive, with a selectable rear-drive mode that sends all torque to the rear wheels. These gasoline versions come as a two-door and as a four-door.
The new Charger still seats five. The liftback changes what you can carry: the coupe is rated at 22.7 cubic feet, or 644 litres, with the rear seats up, and 37.4 cubic feet, or 1,059 litres, folded, while the sedan goes up to 38.5 cubic feet. On the technology side there is a 10.25-inch digital cluster, an available 16-inch instrument display, a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen, an augmented reality head-up display and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside automatic emergency braking, active lane management and active blind spot monitoring.
A four-door sedan with a separate trunk and a model year from 2016 to 2023 is the older generation. Model year 2024 or newer is the new one, with a liftback body.
Model year 2023. Production ended at the Brampton plant in Ontario on December 22, 2023.
The older sedan was assembled in Brampton, Ontario. The new generation is built at Windsor Assembly Plant, also in Ontario. Both generations are Canadian-built.
The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, the 5.7-litre HEMI V8, the 6.4-litre V8 of the Scat Pack 392 and SRT 392, and the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 of the SRT Hellcat and Redeye.
Yes, on the 2016 to 2023 sedan, but only with the 3.6-litre V6 and only on trims whose name ends in AWD. On the new generation it is standard.
An AWD Charger is built to run all year: the active transfer case restores traction as soon as grip drops, then disconnects the front axle on dry pavement. In Quebec, four compliant winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15.
SXT and GT are the 3.6-litre V6 versions. R/T means the 5.7-litre V8 and Scat Pack 392 the 6.4-litre V8. The SRT Hellcat and Redeye get the supercharged V8.
They are 2023 special editions, along with the Scat Pack Swinger, created to mark the end of production of the sedan.
No. It launched as a full electric under the Charger Daytona name for 2024, then the 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six SIXPACK was added for 2026, at 420 and 550 horsepower.
The figures announced for Canada are more than 510 kilometres for the Daytona R/T and 418 kilometres for the Daytona Scat Pack, with a 100.5 kilowatt-hour battery.
Five seats in both cases. The 2016 to 2023 sedan offers 16.5 cubic feet, or 467 litres. The new generation is rated at 22.7 cubic feet in coupe form with the seats up, and up to 38.5 cubic feet in the sedan.
