Used Jeep Compass for sale near Levis and Quebec City

The Compass is the compact way into the Jeep family, and on the Trailhawk it brings real off-road hardware. At Daniel Paré Dodge Chrysler, shoppers from Levis, Quebec City, Beauce and Bellechasse ask about it constantly. It is also a model where the year on the paperwork does not tell you everything.

The 2017 trap, two completely different Compass models

This is the single most important thing to know. For the 2017 model year, two completely different Jeep Compass vehicles were sold in Canada at the same time: the outgoing generation, with its squared-off styling, built in Belvidere, Illinois, and the new generation, built in Toluca, Mexico, added partway through the year.

This was not a marketing nuance. The Government of Canada listed the two vehicles under two separate names in its fuel consumption data, the newer one literally identified as New Compass, and Jeep Canada presented them separately as well. They share no platform, no plant, no engine, no transmission, no bodywork, no cargo volume and no four-wheel-drive system.

Three details settle the question every time. The continuously variable transmission and the Freedom Drive system exist only on the older generation. The nine-speed automatic, along with the Trailhawk and Limited trims, exists only on the newer one. And cargo volume reads 643 litres on the old car against 770 litres on the new one.

The first generation, for buyers who still come across one

Its final Canadian model year is 2017, in Sport, North Edition and High Altitude trim. Engines were a 2.0L making 158 horsepower and 141 lb-ft on front-wheel-drive versions, or a 2.4L making 172 horsepower and 165 lb-ft, paired with a five-speed manual, a six-speed automatic or a CVT. Four-wheel drive came as Freedom Drive I, or Freedom Drive II for the off-road package, which added a low range through the CVT for a 19.11:1 crawl ratio, 231 millimetres of ground clearance, and approach, breakover and departure angles of 29.6, 23.6 and 31.2 degrees. Five seats, 643 litres of cargo space, 1,518 litres with the seats folded, and towing of 454 kilograms, or 907 with the trailer tow prep group.

The second generation, the one you will actually be shopping

Launched in Canada partway through the 2017 model year, it has been built in Toluca, Mexico, for the entire run and is still in the lineup for 2026. It uses four-wheel independent suspension, frequency-dependent damping and electric power steering. From 2017 through 2026 the numbers hold steady: five seats, 770 litres of cargo space, 1,693 litres with the seats folded, and 907 kilograms of towing, or 2,000 pounds, when properly equipped.

The 2023 engine change, the other thing to check

From 2017 to 2022 the second-generation Compass uses a naturally aspirated 2.4L four-cylinder rated at 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. For 2022 the rating becomes 177 horsepower and 172 lb-ft, which reflects a revised measurement standard rather than a different or weaker engine. The gearbox is a nine-speed automatic on four-wheel-drive models and a six-speed on front-drive models. For 2023 the engine changes to a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft, matched to an eight-speed automatic.

The real difference is in the torque curve. The old engine needed 3,900 rpm to reach its 175 lb-ft. The turbo delivers 221 lb-ft from 1,750 rpm: 46 lb-ft more, arriving more than 2,000 rpm earlier. That transforms how it feels passing on the highway or climbing a grade. Official combined fuel consumption improves as well, from 9.5 to 8.8 litres per 100 kilometres.

Front-wheel drive, the manual gearbox and the electrified question

No, Canadian Compass models have not always been all-wheel drive. From 2017 to 2020, front-wheel drive was offered on several trims, notably Sport and North. For 2021 and 2022 it survives only on the Sport. From 2023 on, every Canadian trim is all-wheel drive without exception, so the check only matters on a 2017 to 2022 car.

A six-speed manual was offered on the second generation from the 2017 model year through 2020 inclusively, mostly on the Sport. It is gone as of 2021, which means a second-generation Compass with three pedals has to be a 2017 to 2020.

And to be blunt about it: no hybrid, no 4xe plug-in hybrid and no fully electric Compass has ever been sold in Canada, at any point. The Compass 4xe exists, but only in Europe and certain other markets.

Canadian trims, and why we say North

North is a Canada-only name. Where the United States sells a Latitude, Canada sells a North, and the Latitude and Latitude LUX badges are American. A Compass Latitude spotted in Quebec is very likely an import. Canadian trims are Sport, North, Limited and Trailhawk, present from 2017 and still offered for 2026, plus Altitude, a blacked-out appearance package layered onto the North, an 80th Anniversary edition in 2021, an 85th Anniversary edition in 2026, and a handful of special editions offered toward the end of the 2010s.

    The four-wheel-drive systems

Jeep Active Drive is a single-speed all-wheel-drive system with a disconnecting transfer case and rear axle to save fuel, shifting into four-wheel drive automatically. It was optional on Sport and North from 2017 to 2022, standard on Limited, then standard across the board from 2023. Jeep Active Drive Low is Trailhawk-only and standard for the whole generation: a full-time system that adds a low range for a 20:1 crawl ratio, with a shorter final drive than the rest of the lineup. Selec-Terrain provides Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes on every four-wheel-drive model, plus a Rock mode reserved for the Trailhawk. Front-drive versions did not get Selec-Terrain.

    What the Trailhawk actually adds

The Trailhawk is the only version with a low range, at 20:1, and it brings Rock mode and hill descent control. Ground clearance runs 216 to 219 millimetres against roughly 207 to 208 elsewhere in the lineup. The most dramatic gap is the approach angle: more than 30 degrees, against roughly 16 degrees on the other trims. Breakover sits near 24 degrees, departure near 34, and water fording goes to 482 millimetres. Add a ride height raised about 25 millimetres, skid plates, red tow hooks front and rear, 17-inch all-terrain tires and Trailhawk-specific fascias.

Screens and driver assistance, year by year

From 2017 to 2021 the screen measures 5, 7 or 8.4 inches depending on trim. For 2022 the Uconnect 5 system arrives with an 8.4-inch display standard on Sport and a 10.1-inch display on everything else, plus an available 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available as early as 2017, but only with the 8.4-inch screen, never with the base 5-inch radio. They spread through the range in 2018 and 2019 as the 7-inch screen became standard on Sport and North, and the wireless version arrives with the 2022 model year.

From 2017 to 2020 there are more than 65 available safety features, but the active aids sit mostly in options and packages. For 2021 they become standard on Limited and Trailhawk. The real hinge is 2022, when full-speed forward collision warning with active braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, active lane management with lane keeping, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross path detection all became standard across the entire lineup, joined by drowsy driver detection and a rear seat reminder. For 2023, automatic high beams became standard from the North up.

Six things to know before buying a used Compass

    1. On a 2017, identify the generation first: CVT and Freedom Drive mean the old one, a nine-speed and Trailhawk mean the new one.
    2. If low-end pull matters, shop 2023 or newer for the turbo 2.0L and its 221 lb-ft from 1,750 rpm.
    3. Before 2023, confirm whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. From 2023 the question disappears.
    4. A manual second-generation Compass is necessarily a 2017 to 2020.
    5. Only the Trailhawk has a low range, Rock mode and an approach angle over 30 degrees.
    6. For CarPlay on an early car, make sure you are looking at the 8.4-inch screen.

Used Jeep Compass questions we hear most

Why do people say there are two 2017 Jeep Compass models?

Because there are. The outgoing generation from Belvidere, Illinois, and the new one from Toluca, Mexico, were both sold here that year, and the Government of Canada listed the newer one as New Compass.

How do I tell the two 2017 models apart?

The CVT and Freedom Drive appear only on the older car, the nine-speed automatic and the Trailhawk and Limited trims only on the newer one. Cargo volume is 643 litres against 770.

What changes for the 2023 model year?

    The engine. From 2017 to 2022, a naturally aspirated 2.4L with 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. From 2023, a turbocharged 2.0L with 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft.

Is every used Compass all-wheel drive?

No. From 2017 to 2020 it appears on several trims, including Sport and North. For 2021 and 2022 front-wheel drive survives only on the Sport. From 2023 on, everything Canadian is all-wheel drive.

Can I find a Compass with a manual gearbox?

Yes, on the second generation, from the 2017 model year through 2020 inclusively, mostly on the Sport. The six-speed manual disappears as of 2021.

Is there a hybrid Jeep Compass in Canada?

No. No hybrid, 4xe plug-in or fully electric Compass has ever been offered here. The 4xe exists, but only in Europe and certain other markets.

What does the Trailhawk really add?

A 20:1 low range, Rock mode, hill descent control, 216 to 219 millimetres of ground clearance, an approach angle over 30 degrees instead of roughly 16, and water fording to 482 millimetres.

Why is it called North instead of Latitude?

North is simply the Canadian name for the trim the United States calls Latitude. A Compass Latitude found in Quebec is very likely an import.

Does a 2017 Compass have Apple CarPlay?

Only with the 8.4-inch screen. The base 5-inch radio never supported it. The wireless version arrives with the 2022 model year.

How much can a Jeep Compass tow?

On the second generation, 907 kilograms, or 2,000 pounds, when properly equipped. On the first generation, 454 kilograms, or 907 with the trailer tow prep group.

Does the Compass suit a Quebec winter?

Four-wheel-drive models have Jeep Active Drive and Selec-Terrain with a Snow mode. In Quebec, four compliant winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15.

Can you service my Compass and take my current vehicle on trade?

Yes to both. Our shops in Sainte-Marie and Saint-Malachie service Jeep vehicles with factory-trained technicians and genuine Mopar parts, and we appraise trade-ins of any brand on site, which can reduce the amount subject to sales tax.
