The Ram 2500 is what contractors, farmers and large travel trailer owners turn to when a half ton truck runs out of room. At Daniel Paré Dodge Chrysler, it is one of the most requested models among buyers from Beauce, Bellechasse, Lévis and the Quebec City area. Between the 2016 and 2026 model years it changed generation, changed engines and even changed transmission on the diesel side. Here is how to tell one from the other.
The Ram Heavy Duty was completely redesigned for the 2019 model year, introduced by FCA Canada in January 2019. That makes 2016 through 2018 the previous generation, and 2019 onward the current one. The redesign is what brought the large touchscreens, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an eight speed automatic behind the gas V8.
The most recent mid cycle update landed on the 2025 model year, revealed by Stellantis in January 2025. The front end was restyled and the cabin gained Uconnect 5 with a 12 inch or 14.5 inch touchscreen, a 10.25 inch interactive passenger display and a 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster. Under the hood, the Cummins received a fully reworked version and a new transmission.
For the 2016, 2017 and 2018 model years, the 5.7L HEMI V8 appeared in the Canadian Ram 2500 lineup with 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. It left the Heavy Duty range with the 2019 redesign. The 6.4L HEMI V8 spans the entire period: 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft from 2016 through 2024, then 405 horsepower from 2025. It is the engine that unlocks the highest payload rating, and the only one the Power Wagon has ever used.
The 6.7L Cummins inline six turbo diesel was offered throughout the period, but its output changed several times. Two diesel Ram 2500s from different years do not drive the same way at all.
From 2016 to 2018 it came two ways: 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft with the G56 six speed manual, or 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft with the automatic. From 2019 to 2024 the Ram 2500 used the standard output version, 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft, which is the most common rating on today's used market. The high output version of that generation, first 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft and later 420 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft, was reserved for the Ram 3500.
From the 2025 model year, the standard output version disappears and the Ram 2500 gets the fully redesigned high output Cummins as its only diesel, rated at 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft, a rating carried into 2026.
The gas V8s used the 66RFE six speed automatic from 2016 to 2018. With the 2019 redesign, the 6.4L moved to the eight speed TorqueFlite HD and has kept it since.
The diesel stayed on six speeds far longer. From 2016 to 2024 the Cummins was paired with the 68RFE automatic, aside from the manual in the early years. The switch comes with the 2025 model year, when the Cummins moves to the eight speed TorqueFlite HD. It is worth confirming when you compare a 2024 against a 2025, because the closer ratios change how the truck behaves under a trailer.
This is the Ram 2500's most distinctive mechanical trait. Unlike rival three quarter ton trucks, which use leaf springs, it runs coil springs on a solid rear axle, a layout Ram describes as exclusive in its segment. It is the reason the truck feels noticeably less harsh on broken pavement when the box is empty. An auto levelling rear air suspension was also offered as an option on four wheel drive models.
The Power Wagon was offered without interruption across the period, as a four wheel drive crew cab. It has always used the 6.4L HEMI V8 and, through the 2026 model year, never the Cummins. Its hardware is unmatched in the segment: electronic locking front and rear differentials, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, a 12,000 pound Warn Zeon 12 winch, Bilstein shocks, the Articulink front suspension and 33 inch tires.
Towing capacity is what the truck pulls behind it, on a trailer riding on its own wheels. Payload is what the truck itself carries: passengers, whatever is in the box, and the tongue weight the trailer puts on the hitch. Gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum permitted weight of the loaded truck.
On the current generation, Ram Canada lists a maximum towing rating of 20,000 pounds, or 9,071 kilograms, with the Cummins, and a maximum payload of 4,580 pounds, or 2,077 kilograms, with the 6.4L V8. With the diesel the payload rating drops to 3,590 pounds, and with the gas V8 the towing rating drops to 17,440 pounds. The two maximums never come from the same configuration.
From 2016 to 2018 the Canadian lineup included ST, SLT, Outdoorsman, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, Laramie Limited and Power Wagon. With the 2019 redesign it became Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, Limited and Power Wagon, and Rebel joined for 2023. Body styles cover the regular cab with an 8 foot box, the crew cab with a 6 foot 4 inch or 8 foot box, and the Mega Cab.
From 2016 to 2018 you find Uconnect touchscreens of 5 or 8.4 inches, with no factory Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Both arrive with the 2019 redesign, alongside an optional 12 inch vertical screen, and Uconnect 5 follows for 2022. The current generation also brought automatic emergency braking, the surround view camera, trailer tire pressure monitoring and the digital rearview mirror with tow mode.
The 2019 model year. Years 2016 through 2018 belong to the previous generation, and 2019 onward to the current one, which received a significant update for 2025.
Yes, on the 2016, 2017 and 2018 model years, rated at 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. It left the Heavy Duty lineup with the 2019 redesign.
From 2016 to 2018, 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft with the manual, or 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft with the automatic. From 2019 to 2024, 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft. From 2025, 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft.
For the 2025 model year. Before that the Cummins used the 68RFE six speed automatic, and a manual from 2016 to 2018.
Yes, across the whole period, rather than the leaf springs its rivals use. Ram describes the layout as exclusive in its segment. An auto levelling rear air suspension was also optional on four wheel drive models.
It adds electronic locking front and rear differentials, a disconnecting front sway bar, a 12,000 pound Warn Zeon 12 winch, Bilstein shocks, the Articulink suspension and 33 inch tires. Through the 2026 model year it was never offered as a diesel.
Towing is what the truck pulls behind it on a trailer riding on its own wheels. Payload is what the truck carries itself, meaning passengers, box contents and tongue weight. Gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum permitted weight of the loaded truck. The two published maximums never come from the same configuration, and we confirm the numbers for each unit.
With the 2019 model year redesign. The 2016 to 2018 trucks used 5 or 8.4 inch Uconnect screens without that feature.
It may. In Quebec, a truck in this class can be subject to registration in the register of heavy vehicle owners and operators depending on its gross vehicle weight rating and how it is used. Our advisors review this with each customer.
No. That Ram Canada powertrain warranty applies only to the retail purchase or lease of a new, never registered 2026 or 2027 model year vehicle.
Four wheel drive versions, ground clearance and sheer weight make it a common choice among contractors and farmers in the region. In Quebec, four compliant winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15.
