A Ram 3500 is not simply a larger Ram 1500. It belongs to a different class of truck, built to pull a big fifth-wheel trailer, carry a loaded dump insert or haul farm equipment. At Daniel Paré Dodge Chrysler, it is the truck contractors and farmers across Beauce, Bellechasse and the Quebec City region come looking for once a Ram 2500 stops being enough. Shopping one used comes down to three questions: which period the truck belongs to, which engine it carries, and whether it rides on single or dual rear wheels.
Model years 2016, 2017 and 2018 close out the previous Ram Heavy Duty generation. It is the only stretch in which a Ram 3500 could be ordered with a manual gearbox.
The full redesign lands with the 2019 model year: new frame, new body, new interior, new towing electronics. That generation is still running today.
The most recent mid-cycle update belongs to model year 2025, bringing a fully renewed Cummins, an eight-speed automatic behind every engine and a redesigned dashboard.
The 5.7L gas V8, rated at 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft with a six-speed automatic, appears on the Canadian Ram 3500 spec sheet for 2016, 2017 and 2018 only, then leaves the heavy duty line.
The 6.4L gas V8 runs the whole way through: 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft with the six-speed automatic from 2016 to 2018, except in Mega Cab where it is rated at 370 horsepower, the same figures behind an eight-speed automatic through 2024, and 405 horsepower since 2025.
The 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel inline six is where the tiers multiply. For 2016 and 2017: 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft with the manual, 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft in standard output with the six-speed automatic, and 385 horsepower and 900 lb-ft in high output with the Aisin automatic. For 2018 the high output climbs to 930 lb-ft.
From 2019 to 2020 the standard output delivers 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft with the six-speed automatic, while the high output, exclusive to the Ram 3500, reaches 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft with the Aisin. From 2021 to 2024 the high output rises to 420 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft. Since 2025 the renewed Cummins settles the range at 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft.
A Ram 3500 carries either two tires at the rear or four, meaning six in total. What decides which one is fitted is the gross vehicle weight rating, the maximum the loaded truck itself is allowed to weigh. Single rear wheels top out at 12,300 pounds. Reaching the 14,000 pound maximum requires duals.
Four practical consequences follow. Capability: the highest payload and towing figures belong to the dual rear wheel truck. Width: the flared rear fenders complicate street parking, a residential garage door and narrow bush roads. Handling: lateral stability behind a large fifth-wheel is clearly better, but the truck threads through daily traffic less easily. Tires: six to replace instead of four.
Hauling heavy is a dually job. Doing double duty as a daily driver points to single rear wheels, which still leave you well ahead of a Ram 2500.
Towing capacity is what the truck pulls behind it. Payload is what it carries in the box and the cab. Gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum weight of the loaded truck itself. The three do not add up together.
For 2016 through 2018, Canadian literature lists up to 14,157 kilograms, or 31,210 pounds, of towing with the Cummins, and up to 3,352 kilograms, or 7,390 pounds, of payload. Model years 2019 and 2020 reach 35,100 and 7,680 pounds, 2021 pushes towing to 37,100 pounds, and since 2025 the figures read 36,610 and 7,590 pounds.
Here is the counterintuitive part. Maximum payload comes from the 6.4L gas V8, not from the diesel. The arithmetic is simple: the Cummins and its supporting hardware are heavy, and that weight is subtracted from what is left over for cargo. On recent trucks the gas model reaches 7,590 pounds against roughly 6,050 for the diesel.
Maximum towing works the other way, and is only available with the high output Cummins, on duals, with a gooseneck hitch. The truck that carries the most and the truck that pulls the most are not the same truck. Our advisors confirm the exact ratings on any unit you are considering.
A fifth-wheel hitch is required for any trailer over 23,000 pounds, and a gooseneck hitch for any trailer over 30,000 pounds. Target tongue weight is 10 percent of gross trailer weight with a conventional hitch and 15 percent with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck. That tongue weight counts against the truck's payload.
From 2016 to 2018 the Canadian heavy duty range includes ST, SLT, Outdoorsman, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Laramie Limited. Since 2019 the naming becomes Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Limited Longhorn and Limited, a structure still in place for 2026. There is no Power Wagon and no Rebel on the Ram 3500, since both belong to the Ram 2500.
Bodies run to Regular Cab with the 8 foot box, Crew Cab with the 6 foot 4 inch or 8 foot box, and Mega Cab with the 6 foot 4 inch box. The Mega Cab offers the most generous rear legroom in the range, at the cost of a shorter box.
From 2016 to 2018 you get a 3.5 inch information display, a 7 inch cluster screen on upper trims and a Uconnect touchscreen of 5 or 8.4 inches. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto reach the Canadian Ram Heavy Duty catalogue in 2018.
The 2019 generation brings 5, 8.4 and 12 inch screens, the largest of them vertical with split-screen use, a surround-view camera with trailer reverse guidance and trailer tire pressure monitoring. Since 2025 there is Uconnect 5 with a 12 or 14.5 inch display, a 12.3 inch digital cluster and trailer reverse steering control.
Two tires at the rear versus four, so six in total. Duals allow a higher gross vehicle weight rating and the maximum capability numbers, at the cost of extra width and two more tires to replace.
Up to 12,300 pounds on single rear wheels and 14,000 pounds on duals. That is the maximum weight of the loaded truck, not to be confused with towing or payload.
Up to 31,210 pounds from 2016 to 2018, then 35,100 pounds for 2019 and 2020 and 37,100 pounds from 2021, with the Cummins and dual rear wheels.
No, from the 6.4L gas V8. The Cummins package weighs more and reduces what is left for cargo: 7,590 pounds on gas against roughly 6,050 on diesel for recent trucks.
The high output makes more torque and gets a stronger transmission: 900 rising to 930 lb-ft between 2016 and 2018, 1,000 lb-ft in 2019 and 2020, then 1,075 lb-ft from 2021 to 2024, against 850 lb-ft for the standard output.
A fifth-wheel is required past 23,000 pounds and a gooseneck past 30,000 pounds. Target tongue weight is 10 percent with a conventional hitch and 15 percent in the other two cases.
No, both are offered only on the Ram 2500. The Ram 3500 has run as Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Limited Longhorn and Limited since 2019.
It is the roomiest cab in the range, paired with the 6 foot 4 inch box, with more rear legroom than the Crew Cab.
Model year 2018, on the 8.4 inch Uconnect system. The 2016 and 2017 trucks did not have it from the factory.
It may. Registration in the register of owners and operators of heavy vehicles applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,500 kilograms or more, a threshold every Ram 3500 exceeds. The actual obligation also depends on how the truck is used, and our advisors go through it with you.
No. That Ram Canada powertrain warranty covers only the retail purchase or lease of a new, never registered 2026 or 2027 model year vehicle.
Four-wheel drive and sheer mass make it capable on snow, though an empty box calls for a light touch. In Quebec, four compliant winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15, and a dually needs six.
