The Ram ProMaster is the brand's full-size cargo van, the one you see every day behind plumbers, electricians and delivery drivers around Lévis, Quebec City and the Beauce. Its front-wheel drive and very low load floor make it an easier tool to live with than most vans in its class. Because the model changed a great deal between the 2016 and 2026 model years, knowing exactly which one you are looking at matters.
The ProMaster reached the Canadian market for the 2014 model year. It is not a North American design: it is an adapted version of the Fiat Ducato, a European van already in production for more than thirty years when it arrived here, and Ram's first truck collaboration with Fiat Professional. Every configuration comes out of the Saltillo Commercial Truck Assembly Plant in Mexico. That heritage explains the tall square body, the flat low floor and the upright driving position, all designed around urban delivery and cargo upfitting.
This is the most common mix-up, and it is worth clearing up right away. These are not two versions of the same van. The ProMaster is the big one, derived from the Fiat Ducato, built in Saltillo, offered in several wheelbases and roof heights. The ProMaster City is the small compact van, derived from the Fiat Doblò, built in Bursa, Turkey, and sold in Canada from the 2015 through 2022 model years with a 2.4-litre four cylinder rated at 178 horsepower and 174 lb-ft. If you want to stand up inside the cargo area, you want the ProMaster.
The most significant change arrives for the 2022 model year. The van drops the 62TE six-speed automatic it had used since launch and picks up a TorqueFlite nine-speed automatic paired with a revised 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. The multimedia system changes at the same time. Uconnect 3 with its 5-inch display gives way to Uconnect 5, described as five times faster, with a 7-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. That is exactly when Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrive in the ProMaster: a 2021 or older example does not have them from the factory. Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning, Crosswind Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera also join the list.
The nose changes one year later. The 2023 model year brings the new front end, noticeably brighter headlights, the super high roof and the digital rear-view mirror. To place an example at a glance, the new nose means 2023 or newer, and the nine-speed means 2022 or newer.
The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 runs through the whole period. From 2016 to 2021 it is rated at 280 horsepower and 260 lb-ft with the six-speed automatic. It keeps that rating for 2022 with the nine-speed, then Canadian spec sheets list it at 276 horsepower and 250 lb-ft from 2023 onward.
The diesel deserves a mention, because many buyers do not realize it was ever sold here. The 3.0-litre EcoDiesel four cylinder, 174 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, appears on Canadian ProMaster spec sheets for 2016, 2017 and 2018, matched to a six-speed automated manual used only with that engine. It disappears afterward, so a diesel ProMaster is necessarily a 2018 or older example, which makes it an uncommon find on the used market.
The ProMaster is front-wheel drive, and Ram calls that class-exclusive. With no driveshaft and no rear differential under the floor, the body sits lower: Ram quotes a 21-inch load floor height, the lowest in the class. For a driver climbing in and out forty times a day, that difference shows up by the end of the shift, and the flat uninterrupted floor makes shelving much easier to install.
In winter, front-wheel drive also changes how the van behaves. The engine's weight sits directly over the driven wheels, which helps the tires bite when pulling away. That matters most in the situation every commercial van faces constantly, the trip back at the end of a route with an empty box, when a rear-wheel-drive van has almost no weight over its driven wheels.
The ProMaster comes as a cargo van, a window van, a chassis cab and a cutaway for custom upfitting. Three wheelbases appear in the Canadian lineup: 118, 136 and 159 inches, the longest also available with an extended body. Before 2023 there are two roof heights, low and high, and 2023 adds the super high roof. Cargo lengths run from roughly 8 to 13.5 feet depending on the 1500, 2500 or 3500 series.
Cargo volume runs from about 259 to 462.9 cubic feet, and passes 14,150 litres with the super high roof. Interior cargo height reaches roughly 66, 77 or 86 inches depending on the roof. Width between the wheel wells is 56 inches, enough to lay a 4-foot by 8-foot sheet flat on the floor.
The rear swing doors open to 260 degrees, far enough to fold them back along the body when backing up to a dock, and the side sliding door gives an opening about 49 inches wide. Ram also claims the turning diameter as an advantage, roughly 36 feet on the short wheelbase.
These three numbers get mixed up constantly. Payload is what you put in the vehicle, occupants and gear included: up to 4,680 pounds on recent model years. Towing capacity is what you pull behind you: up to 6,910 pounds when properly equipped, against roughly 5,100 pounds in the model's early years. Gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum allowable weight of the loaded vehicle, roughly 8,550 to 9,350 pounds depending on the series.
The all-electric ProMaster is offered in Canada from the 2025 model year, with a 110-kWh battery and a 200-kilowatt front electric drive module rated at 268 horsepower and 302 lb-ft. Ram quoted a targeted city range of up to 290 kilometres for 2025, and the Canadian 2026 page lists an estimated range of up to 264 kilometres. It stays front-wheel drive, in high roof form on the 159-inch wheelbase, standard or extended body.
Two separate vehicles. The ProMaster is the full-size van derived from the Fiat Ducato and built in Mexico. The ProMaster City is the small compact van derived from the Fiat Doblò, built in Turkey and sold here from 2015 to 2022.

The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, rated 280 horsepower and 260 lb-ft through 2022 and 276 horsepower and 250 lb-ft from 2023. The 3.0-litre EcoDiesel four cylinder, 174 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, appears on Canadian spec sheets through 2018.
Yes, on every version and every year. That layout is what allows the lowest load floor in the class, 21 inches off the ground.
Yes. The engine's weight sits over the driven wheels, which helps traction from a stop, especially with an empty box on the way back from a route. In Quebec, four compliant winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15.
Roughly 259 to 462.9 cubic feet depending on configuration, and more than 14,150 litres with the super high roof introduced for 2023.
Yes. Width between the wheel wells is 56 inches, which leaves room for a 4-foot sheet lying flat on the floor.

Its flat low floor, the width between the wheel wells and the interior height of the high and super high roofs make it a very popular starting point.
No. That Ram Canada limited powertrain warranty covers only the retail purchase or lease of a new, never-registered 2026 or 2027 model year vehicle, and it excludes all-electric vehicles and fleet purchases.
