The Chrysler Grand Caravan holds an unusual spot in the used market: it is a minivan sold in Canada only, built in Windsor, Ontario, and launched for the 2021 model year. At Daniel Paré Dodge Chrysler, it appeals to families across Lévis, Quebec City, Beauce and Bellechasse. Its story is simple mechanically and far more layered when it comes to equipment.
Despite the name, this van is not a descendant of the Dodge Grand Caravan. It rides on the Chrysler Pacifica platform and shares its body and dimensions: a wheelbase of 3,089 millimetres, a length of 5,176, a width of 2,022 and a height of 1,777 millimetres. What separates the two models is content and lineup, not structure.
In the United States, the same vehicle is sold as the Chrysler Voyager, a name never used here. One detail worth knowing: the Voyager ends after the 2026 model year, while the Canadian Grand Caravan carries on into 2027.
Nothing under the hood has changed in seven model years. Every Grand Caravan uses the 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 with variable valve timing and stop and start, rated at 287 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 262 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm, paired with a nine speed TorqueFlite automatic.
It runs on 87 octane regular fuel, holds 71.9 litres and is rated at 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 8.4 on the highway and 10.6 combined, figures that apply to every model year.
Just as important: the Grand Caravan is front wheel drive only, every year, without exception. Anyone who needs all wheel drive has to look at the Chrysler Pacifica, the only member of the family that offers it.
2021 is the only model year with more than one trim: a base model with no suffix and an SXT. From 2022 on, SXT is the only trim offered, and it still is for 2027. The change went the opposite way from what most people assume, since it is the base model that disappeared.
Two model years shape the story of this van: 2022 and 2025.
At launch in 2021, it came with Uconnect 4 and a 7 inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 3.5 inch digital instrument cluster, a standard back up camera and quad halogen reflector headlamps. Third row Stow 'n Go was standard, second row Stow 'n Go was optional: a fixed bench on the base model, quad seats with floor bins on the SXT. Power sliding doors and a power liftgate were unavailable on the base model and optional on the SXT, as were heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The SXT included three zone manual air conditioning, an 8 way power driver seat and 17 inch aluminum wheels, against 17 inch steel wheels with covers on the base model. Driver assistance, meaning blind spot monitoring with rear cross path detection, rear park assist and forward collision warning with active braking and pedestrian detection, was optional only, and cruise control was the conventional type. 2021 was also the only year with eight passenger seating, optional on the SXT, and a rear DVD player.
2022 is the first turning point, and it moved a long list of features onto the standard equipment sheet. Along with the switch to a single SXT trim, power sliding doors and a power liftgate, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, second and third row Stow 'n Go with in floor storage bins, remote start, an alarm and keyless entry on all doors all became standard. Infotainment moved to Uconnect 5, still on a 7 inch screen, but now with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, over the air updates and dual phone pairing. Three zone manual air conditioning, a high efficiency cabin air filter, six speakers with active noise cancellation, SiriusXM and LED tail lamps were added as well. Seating became seven passengers only, and driver assistance stayed optional, in a package that also included built in navigation with a 10.1 inch screen.
2023 and 2024 carried over with no equipment changes, new colours only.
2025 is the second turning point, this time on technology. What used to be optional became standard: Uconnect 5 with a 10.1 inch screen, a 7 inch digital cluster in place of the 3.5 inch unit, adaptive cruise control, never offered before even as an option, blind spot monitoring with rear cross path detection, lane departure warning, which did not exist before 2025, rear park assist and emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Three zone air conditioning switched from manual to automatic, and leather trimmed seats, a super console, second row sunshades and tinted glass joined the list. The 2026 and 2027 model years carry that content forward, with animal free synthetic leather upholstery and 17 inch wheels in a Tech Silver finish.
The short version: if you want power doors, heated seats and second row Stow 'n Go as standard, shop 2022 or newer. If you also want the driver assistance features as standard, shop 2025 or newer.
Cargo volumes have never changed: 914.6 litres behind the third row, 2,477.7 litres behind the second and up to 3,978 litres behind the first. Seating is seven in every model year, apart from the eight passenger option offered in 2021.
The Grand Caravan is about well equipped essentials in a Canadian built family package. It has never been offered with all wheel drive, a plug in hybrid powertrain, wheels larger than 17 inches, a premium audio system, a sunroof, a 360 degree camera, an interior camera for watching the rear seats, a built in vacuum or hands free doors, since those touches belong to the Pacifica. Built in navigation, on the other hand, was indeed available as an option from 2022 on, with the 10.1 inch screen.
Because the van is front wheel drive, tires matter that much more. In Quebec, four compliant winter tires are required from December 1 to March 15, and on a front wheel drive minivan that rule carries real weight.
A Grand Caravan from 2020 or earlier is a Dodge, built on a completely different platform with a 283 horsepower V6 and a six speed automatic, with no mechanical connection to the Chrysler. One from 2021 or later is a Chrysler, built on the Pacifica, with the 287 horsepower, 262 lb-ft V6 and the nine speed automatic.
The Chrysler Pacifica is the reference model of the family and the only one offered with all wheel drive and a plug in hybrid system. The Chrysler Voyager is the American name for what Canada calls the Grand Caravan. The Chrysler Town and Country is the upscale ancestor, whose final model year was 2016 on the older platform.
They are two different vehicles that share a name. The Dodge ends with 2020, on an older platform, with a 283 horsepower V6 and six speeds. The Chrysler starts in 2021, on the Pacifica platform, with 287 horsepower and nine speeds.
They share the same body, dimensions and mechanicals. The difference is content and lineup, with the Pacifica being the only one offered with all wheel drive and a plug in hybrid system.
No. From 2021 through 2027 it is front wheel drive only. In this family, only the Pacifica offers all wheel drive.
2022. In 2021, third row Stow 'n Go was standard, but the second row version was an option, and only on the SXT.
2025. Blind spot monitoring, rear park assist, emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control all became standard that year. Before then they were optional, and adaptive cruise was not offered at all.
2022, at the same time as the power liftgate. In 2021 they were unavailable on the base model and optional on the SXT.
It is the better equipped version above the base model in 2021, and the only trim offered from 2022 on. Any Grand Caravan from 2022 or newer is an SXT.
Seven in every model year. Only 2021 offered an eight passenger layout, as an option on the SXT.
12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 8.4 on the highway and 10.6 combined, on regular fuel. Those ratings apply to every model year.
Up to 1,633 kilograms, or 3,600 pounds, when properly equipped. A factory towing group was offered in 2021 only, so we confirm the towing equipment on a case by case basis with each customer.
No. It is exclusive to Canada and built in Windsor, Ontario. Its American counterpart, the Voyager, ends after 2026, while the Grand Caravan continues into 2027.
