The Ram 1500 is the everyday work truck of countless contractors, farmers, tradespeople and outdoor enthusiasts across Beauce, Bellechasse and the Quebec City area. At Daniel Paré Dodge Chrysler, it is also one of the most requested used vehicles on our lot. Since 2016, though, the lineup has branched out considerably: two generations sold side by side, several engines, and two very different sets of capability numbers. Here is how to find your way around it.
This is the single most important thing to understand. From 2019 through 2024, two completely different trucks were sold in Canada under nearly identical names: the new-generation Ram 1500, internal code DT, and the Ram 1500 Classic, code DS, which is the previous generation kept in production as the entry-level model. These are not two trim levels of the same truck. They are separate vehicles with different frames, cabs, dashboards, engines, capacities and technology. The Classic name appears on the quote, on the bill of sale and in the vehicle identification number decode. Model year 2024 is the last Ram 1500 Classic offered in Canada: there is no 2025 or 2026 Classic.
In short: fourth generation, code DS, model years 2016 to 2018. Ram 1500 Classic, same DS platform, model years 2019 to 2024. Fifth generation, code DT, model years 2019 to 2026. Our advisors will confirm on site which family the truck you are looking at belongs to.
The fifth generation took 102 kilograms, or 225 pounds, out of the frame and body, raised towing to 5,783 kilograms, or 12,750 pounds, and payload to 1,043 kilograms, or 2,300 pounds. It introduced the 48-volt eTorque mild hybrid system, the 12-inch portrait touchscreen that was the largest in the class at the time, 151 litres of built-in interior storage and a new suite of driver assistance features. The regular cab did not carry over to this generation.
For 2025, the Hurricane engine family, twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline sixes, arrived along with the Tungsten and RHO trims, while the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 stepped out of the lineup. The cabin gained a 14.5-inch centre touchscreen, a 10.25-inch passenger screen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a colour head-up display of up to 10 inches. Also new: a redesigned grille, new LED headlights, a power-opening and power-closing tailgate with obstacle detection, an active four-corner air suspension with five modes, and Level 2 plus hands-free driving. For 2026, the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 returns with eTorque, rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft.
The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft, comes without eTorque on the DS from 2016 to 2018 and on the Classic from 2019 to 2024, and with eTorque on the DT from 2019 to 2026. The 5.7-litre HEMI V8, 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft, is found in the DS from 2016 to 2018, in the Classic from 2019 to 2024 without eTorque, and in the DT from 2019 to 2024 with or without eTorque depending on the year.
On the diesel side, the first-generation 3.0-litre EcoDiesel, 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft, appears in the DS from 2016 to 2018 and in the 2019 Classic as a late availability. The third-generation EcoDiesel, 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft, powers the DT from 2020 to 2023. The twin-turbo Hurricane arrives for 2025 in standard output form, 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft, and high output form, 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft, the latter also powering the RHO. The TRX, built for model years 2021 to 2024 with a Final Edition in 2024, uses a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 producing 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft, officially presented as the fastest and most powerful mass-produced half-ton truck in the world. Every one of these engines is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. No manual gearbox was ever offered.
As for eTorque itself, it is a 48-volt mild hybrid system built around a 430-watt-hour lithium-ion battery and a belt-driven motor generator that replaces the alternator. It adds torque off the line, up to 130 lb-ft on the V8, manages automatic engine stop-start and recovers energy under braking.
Since model year 2019, the fifth-generation Ram 1500 Sport has been sold only in Canada. It is the first truck model Ram created exclusively for the Canadian market, and Ram Canada still describes it that way. You can spot one by its monochromatic paint, black grille with R-A-M lettering, blacked-out hood badges and window surrounds, 20-inch black aluminum wheels and all-black interior. The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Express Night Edition was another Canada-only offering.
Towing is the weight pulled behind the truck on a trailer riding on its own wheels. Payload is the weight carried by the truck itself, which includes passengers, whatever is in the box and the tongue weight of a trailer. The two maximums are never reached in the same configuration.
For towing: 4,826 kilograms, or 10,640 pounds, for the 2019 Classic with the V8; roughly 4,763 kilograms, or 10,500 pounds, for the 2024 Classic with the V8; 5,783 kilograms, or 12,750 pounds, for the fifth generation from 2019 to 2024 with the V8, the highest figure in Ram 1500 history; 5,697 kilograms, or 12,560 pounds, with the diesel from 2020 to 2023; and 5,253 kilograms, or 11,580 pounds, with the Hurricane in 2025. For payload: up to 1,043 kilograms, or 2,300 pounds, on the fifth generation from 2019 to 2025, and 875 kilograms, or 1,930 pounds, on a 2024 Classic with the V6. Real-world capacity depends on cab, box, drivetrain, axle ratio and towing package, and we confirm the exact figure for the specific truck.
Fourth generation from 2016 to 2018 and Ram 1500 Classic from 2019 to 2024: regular cab with an 8-foot or 6-foot-4 box, quad cab with a 6-foot-4 box, crew cab with a 5-foot-7 or 6-foot-4 box. Fifth generation from 2019 to 2026: no regular cab at all, quad cab with a 6-foot-4 box, crew cab with a 5-foot-7 or 6-foot-4 box. The practical consequence is simple. A buyer who wants a regular cab or an 8-foot box needs to look at a 2016 to 2018 truck or at a Ram 1500 Classic.
On the 2016 and 2017 DS, Uconnect came with a 5-inch or 8.4-inch screen and no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto; both arrived for 2018 with the 8.4-inch screen. On the 2019 to 2024 Ram 1500 Classic, the screen is either 5 inches or 8.4 inches, and CarPlay and Android Auto are tied to the 8.4-inch unit only, never the 5-inch one, even on a recent truck. That is a concrete thing to check before buying. The fifth generation offered 5, 8.4 or 12-inch screens from 2019 to 2021, the 12-inch portrait display with split-screen capability being unique in the segment at the time, then Uconnect 5 with a 12-inch screen from 2022 to 2024, standard on Big Horn and above, and a 12 or 14.5-inch screen for 2025 and 2026. The colour head-up display appears in 2021, the 12-inch digital cluster in 2023 and the 10.25-inch front passenger screen in 2025. Audio ranges from a 6-speaker base setup to a 506-watt Alpine system and a 19-speaker, 900-watt Harman Kardon system, before Klipsch takes over in 2025 with up to 23 speakers and 1,228 watts in the Tungsten.
Driver assistance followed the same curve: rear camera, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning from 2016 to 2018; adaptive cruise with stop and go, forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane departure warning with lane keeping and a surround-view camera in 2019; pedestrian detection, the colour head-up display and trailer reverse guidance in 2021; Level 2 Active Driving Assist, Level 2 plus hands-free driving, traffic sign recognition and parallel and perpendicular park assist in 2025 and 2026. The multifunction 60/40 split tailgate arrives with model year 2019.
Every Ram 1500, Classic included, keeps the multilink coil-spring rear suspension that Ram presents as exclusive in the segment. The RamBox system, those weatherproof, lockable, lit and drainable compartments built into the box walls, spans the whole period as well, as does the in-floor cabin storage. Air suspension remains an option, and it is standard on the fourth-generation Rebel for its raised ride height.
They are two separate trucks sold alongside each other from 2019 to 2024. The Ram 1500 is the fifth generation, code DT. The Classic is the previous generation, code DS, with its own frame, interior, engines and capacities.
