2021 Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle Hybrid, the top of the minivan world with 51 km of electric range

There are minivans, and then there is the Pacifica Pinnacle Hybrid. This one brings together three things you rarely find in the same vehicle: a quilted Nappa leather cabin worthy of a luxury sedan, seven genuinely usable seats, and the ability to handle school, groceries and the commute without burning a drop of fuel. Built in Windsor, Ontario, it shows 39,743 km, roughly 8,000 km a year since it entered service in September 2021, well below the Canadian average. A plug-in hybrid powertrain built for real life

Under the hood, the Atkinson-cycle 3.6L Pentastar V6 makes 220 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. It works alongside two electric motors rated at 84 and 114 horsepower housed in the eFlite electrically variable transmission, for a combined system output of 260 horsepower sent to the front wheels.

What sets this architecture apart is smoothness. No gears to shift, no driveline shunt, no moment where the transmission hunts on a grade. Acceleration is seamless, silent from a standstill, and the gas engine joins in without rear passengers really noticing. On Route 73 or on Beauce back roads, the Pacifica moves with a calm that makes long trips noticeably less tiring. The brakes recover energy under deceleration, and the 12.1 m (39.7 ft.) turning circle makes tight manoeuvres easy for a vehicle 204.3" (5,189 mm) long.


Electric range, charging and fuel consumption

The 16 kWh lithium-ion battery, made up of 96 cells at 360 volts, sits under the second-row floor and delivers 51 km (32 miles) of all-electric range according to the official Canadian rating. In practical terms, 51 km covers most of what a Chaudière-Appalaches family drives in a day: daycare, school, groceries, the arena, a one-way run to Lévis.

Once the battery is depleted, the Pacifica reverts to a conventional hybrid and posts 8.0 L/100 km in the city and 7.9 L/100 km on the highway, compact-car consumption for a seven-seater. On the combined plug-in rating the official figure drops to 2.9 Le/100 km, and the 62.5 L (16.5 gal.) tank allows long stretches between stops.

For charging, expect roughly two hours on a 240V station and about fourteen hours on a standard 120V household outlet. One evening plugged in at home is more than enough.


Pinnacle, the summit of the Pacifica lineup

Pinnacle is not an appearance package, it is the top of the range, and you see it the moment the door opens. All three rows are trimmed in quilted Caramel Nappa leather, with satin chrome plated seat controls and a suede headliner. The second-row captain's chairs get two matching quilted lumbar comfort pillows, a touch borrowed from large luxury sedans that no other minivan offers.

The front seats are heated and ventilated, the steering wheel is heated, and tri-zone automatic climate control is paired with a rear system that includes heating. Second- and third-row windows have integrated sunshades, which changes everything for a child sleeping in late afternoon. The panoramic sunroof floods all three rows with light.


Space, flexibility and life on board

Seven seats in a two, two and three layout. The second row uses removable easy-access captain's chairs that tilt and slide in one motion to open the path to the back, even with a child seat installed. The third row is a 60/40 Stow 'n Go bench that folds completely flat into the floor. The hands-free power liftgate and hands-free power sliding doors open with a motion of the foot, which stops being a gimmick the day you have a child on one arm and two bags on the other. One point of honesty: unlike gas Pacificas, the plug-in hybrid does not offer second-row Stow 'n Go, since the battery occupies that space under the floor. The buckets do come out completely when you need the room.


Exterior design and road presence

The body is finished in Bright White, a colour that shows off the Platinum Chrome exterior trim specific to the Pinnacle. The 18" aluminium wheels wear 235/60R18 self-sealing tires, standard on the plug-in hybrid: they seal themselves after a nail or screw puncture, which offsets the absence of a spare wheel. At 69.9" (1,777 mm) tall, it clears the vast majority of residential garage doors and underground parking structures, unlike many large three-row utility vehicles.


Technology, screens and entertainment

Uconnect 5 runs on a 10.1" touchscreen, the largest standard display in the segment at the time. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and handles separate profiles for each driver in the household. The instrument cluster includes a 7" configurable display showing hybrid system energy flow and remaining charge.

The audio system is a Harman Kardon unit with 20 speakers driven by a 760-watt amplifier and paired with active noise control. This is not an option package, it is standard on the Pinnacle. In a well-insulated cabin often moving silently on electricity, the result comes close to a luxury vehicle.

The Uconnect Theater group is also standard equipment: two 10.1" touchscreens on the seatbacks, each able to play a different source. The FamCAM interior camera lets you see rear-row occupants, including a rear-facing infant, without turning around. The KeySense programmable key fob limits speed and audio volume when a less experienced driver takes the wheel. Remote start and a universal garage door opener round things out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to plug this Pacifica in to use it?
No, and that is the key difference between a plug-in hybrid and an electric vehicle. If you never plug it in, it runs as a conventional hybrid at roughly 8.0 L/100 km, which is still excellent for a seven-seater. Plugging in is a bonus that gives you 51 km without fuel, not a requirement, and a standard 120V outlet is enough for an overnight charge.

How does the high-voltage battery handle Beauce winters?
Like every lithium-ion battery, it loses part of its range below freezing, and you should expect a noticeable drop in January and February. The Pacifica compensates two ways: the gas engine takes over whenever demand exceeds what electricity can supply, and preconditioning warms the cabin while the vehicle is still plugged in.

What is the status of the original warranties on this unit?
The 3-year or 60,000 km basic warranty expired in September 2024, and the 5-year or 100,000 km powertrain warranty runs to September 23, 2026. The high-voltage battery warranty and the federal emissions warranty, however, run to September 23, 2031 or 160,000 km, and major emission component coverage runs to September 23, 2029. Does the hybrid Pacifica lose cargo space to the battery?
Cargo space is untouched: 915 L behind the third row and up to 4,672 L at maximum, exactly like the gas version. The only difference is that the second row does not fold into the floor, since the battery occupies that volume. The buckets do come out completely when needed.

Can this van tow a trailer?
No. Chrysler does not recommend towing with Pacifica plug-in hybrid models, unlike the gas versions. If towing is part of what you need, tell us and we will point you to another unit in inventory.

What about open recalls?
Every open recall is checked in the Stellantis system before delivery and corrected at no charge, as the manufacturer's program provides. On plug-in hybrids, that check pays particular attention to the charging system and the battery management software.
