This 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon in Sarge Green has all the hardware that built the Rubicon's reputation on the trail: front and rear locking differentials, an electronic front sway bar disconnect and FOX shocks. Off-road capability
The Rubicon is the Gladiator built for hard off-roading. Its heavy-duty third-generation Dana axles, an M210 up front and an M220 at the rear, are wide-track units, and each one carries a Tru-Lok electronic locking differential. When a wheel lifts off a rock or drops into a rut, you lock the rear, then the front, and both wheels on the axle turn together.
At the push of a button, the front sway bar disconnects electronically to free up suspension travel. FOX aluminium monotube shocks work at all four corners. Underneath, skid plates protect the fuel tank and the transfer case, and rock rails guard the rocker panels.
According to the Canadian specification sheet for the 2021 Gladiator Rubicon, ground clearance reaches 11.1 in. (281 mm), with a 43.4-degree approach angle, a 20.3-degree breakover angle and a 26-degree departure angle. With the 4.0:1 low range, you can take rutted sugar bush roads and the rocky trails of the Massif du Sud slowly and under control.
Rock-Trac full-time 4WD, the winter advantage
As standard, the Gladiator Rubicon gets a part-time Rock-Trac transfer case. This one received the Rock-Trac full-time option instead, listed on its original window sticker, which keeps the 4.0:1 low range. On top of the 2WD High, 4WD High, Neutral and 4WD Low positions, its lever offers a 4WD AUTO mode: the system engages the front wheels according to traction, and you can leave it on over snow as well as on bare, dry pavement.
That is the whole difference with a part-time 4x4, which should not stay engaged on dry pavement. Here, you move the lever to 4WD AUTO with the first snowfall and leave it there until spring.
Powertrain and driving
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 produces 285 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb-ft (353 N·m) of torque at 4,400 rpm, and it runs on regular 87-octane fuel.
It is paired with the eight-speed automatic transmission, an option on this model. Together with the Class IV hitch, it is what lets the Rubicon tow 7,000 lb (3,175 kg), rather than 4,500 lb (2,041 kg) with the standard manual transmission.
Towing and cargo box
The factory-ordered trailer tow package includes the Class IV hitch receiver, heavy-duty engine cooling and a trailer hitch zoom function on the backup camera, handy when you hitch up alone. The 4-pin and 7-pin wiring harness is standard. According to the Canadian specification sheet, for a Rubicon with the V6 and the automatic:

It is protected by a Mopar spray-in bedliner listed on the original window sticker and closed by a retractable tonneau cover that keeps your gear out of sight. The tailgate has a power lock, and a 400-watt power inverter runs your small devices.
Exterior design and style
Sarge Green, a military-inspired green, is a natural fit on a Rubicon. The two-piece fender flares are painted body colour, and the 17-inch Granite Crystal aluminium wheels are the Rubicon's originals. The factory-ordered LED lighting covers the reflector headlamps, fog lamps, tail lamps and stop lamps.
The truck wears the Freedom Top three-piece modular hardtop, painted body colour. Its two front panels come off for open-air driving over the front seats, the rear window slides, and a defroster keeps it clear in winter. The doors come off too for summer outings. In the interest of transparency: the soft top originally ordered with it is not part of the sale.
Comfort and life on board
The black cabin has cloth seats bearing the Rubicon logo. The factory-ordered winter options add heated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and remote start: in January, you start the truck from the house and step into a cabin that is already warm. Automatic temperature control, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, a tilt and telescoping steering column and power windows with one-touch down up front round out the equipment.
The four-door cab seats five, and a storage bin behind the seats holds straps, gloves and recovery gear. Cloth also has its advantages in a Jeep that gets used for real: it forgives mud, sand and wet clothes.
Technology and connectivity
The Uconnect 4 system with a 7-inch touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free calling and SiriusXM satellite radio (subscription required). There is no built-in navigation: directions come from your phone's apps, projected on the screen. In front of the driver, a 7-inch colour display in the instrument cluster shows driving information.
