The 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic handles the rest. Its closely spaced ratios keep the engine in its torque band under acceleration, then the very tall top gear drops engine speed on the highway. Quadra-Trac II, a two-speed transfer case rather than a simple all-wheel-drive setup

This is where the Grand Cherokee separates itself from most midsize SUVs. Quadra-Trac II uses a genuine two-speed transfer case with a low range. This is not a front-wheel-drive layout that sends torque rearward once the front wheels slip, it is proper four-wheel drive.

The Selec-Terrain system lets you pick a mode to match the surface, whether auto, snow, sand, mud or rock. The module then adjusts torque split, throttle response, traction control behaviour and transmission strategy. In February, in an unplowed driveway or on a country back road, the difference shows up immediately. Hill start assist and hill descent control round out the package. A 6,200 lb tow rating

This unit was built with the Class IV Trailer Tow Group, which brings maximum trailer weight to 6,200 lb (2,818 kg). The group includes the Class IV hitch receiver, the 4- and 7-pin wiring harness, the heavy-duty engine cooling system and the rear load-levelling suspension.

One clarification on that suspension. It is not a compressor-driven air suspension like the one found on Overland and Summit models, it is a rear self-levelling setup that keeps the vehicle sitting straight when the cargo area is loaded or when tongue weight presses on the hitch. That is exactly what a travel trailer, an ATV trailer or a midsize boat calls for. Trailer sway control is standard and works through the brakes if the trailer starts to wander.

For cargo, the load area offers 36.3 cu. ft. (1,028 L) behind the rear seat and 68.3 cu. ft. (1,934 L) with the 60/40 seatbacks folded, and ground clearance measures 8.6" (218 mm).


The Limited X package, everything that used to shine turned black

The treatment is thorough and consistent. Granite Crystal and black grille, gloss black exterior trim, roof rails and Jeep badges, dark windshield surround and dark tail lamp lenses, dark chrome exhaust tips, Sport hood, and 20-inch gloss black aluminium wheels.

Over Diamond Black Crystal Pearl-Coat paint, whose pearl flake comes alive in sunlight, the effect is monochrome without being flat. The lighting follows the same logic, with bi-xenon high intensity discharge headlamps and LED daytime running lamps.


A black cabin under a roof that is mostly glass

The seats are trimmed in black perforated Heritage leather. The front seats are heated and the leather-wrapped steering wheel is heated as well, standard content in Canada that you are glad to have in January. Dual-zone automatic climate control includes infrared sensors and rear seat outlets.

The dual-pane CommandView panoramic sunroof genuinely changes the mood on board. The front section tilts and slides, the rear section is fixed glass, and together they bring daylight all the way back to the rear seat. In an all-black interior, that is what keeps the cabin from feeling closed in.

The power liftgate, remote start, universal garage door opener, security alarm, 115-volt auxiliary outlet and rain-sensing wipers are all standard. The rear bench folds 60/40 and five adults fit without negotiation.


Uconnect 4C NAV with an 8.4-inch touchscreen

The Uconnect 4C NAV system with its 8.4-inch touchscreen became standard on Limited models for 2021.
