Powertrain and driving

The 5.7L HEMI V8 remains the benchmark in this class. Here, 395 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 410 lb-ft of torque at 3,950 rpm, delivered by a cast-iron block with hemispherical combustion chambers, aluminium heads and variable cam timing.

eTorque is not a gimmick. It is a 12 kW belt-starter generator fed by a 48-volt lithium-ion battery, adding up to 130 lb-ft of torque at the exact moment the engine restarts or picks up its pace. Stop-start becomes imperceptible and the launch from a green light is crisper. The official EnerGuide label for this truck reads 13.5 L/100 km city, 10.5 L/100 km highway and 12.1 L/100 km combined. For a four-wheel-drive V8 Crew Cab, that is an honest number.

The drivetrain deserves attention, because this is not the base part-time 4x4. This unit has the electronic on-demand transfer case, with 2WD, 4WD AUTO, 4WD High Lock, Neutral and 4WD Low Lock on a 2.64:1 low range. The 4WD AUTO mode changes everything day to day in Quebec, because it can stay engaged on dry pavement with no risk to the driveline. You pull out of an icy driveway, you take a clear Route 73, you turn off onto a snow-covered concession road, and you touch nothing. The 3.92 axle with anti-spin differential sends torque to the wheel that has grip when the other one spins, and the five-link rear suspension with coil springs gives the RAM the unladen composure that leaf-sprung trucks never match.

These are not theoretical numbers on an under-equipped truck. The Class IV hitch receiver was factory-ordered, the electronic trailer brake controller is integrated into the dash, and the power trailer-tow mirrors are the ones that let you see past a 30-foot travel trailer. With standard trailer sway control, this is a coherent package, not three options thrown together.

The 6-foot-4 box is what really sets this unit apart, because most Crew Cab RAM 1500s on the used market have the short box. Here you get 76.3 in. (1,937 mm) of floor length, 61.5 cu. ft. (1.7 cu. m) of SAE volume, 51 in. (1,295 mm) between the wheelhouses and a 60 in. (1,525 mm) tailgate opening. Sheets of plywood lie flat between the wheelhouses, and you do not have to choose between a full-size rear bench and real cargo capability. The rear wheel-well liners were factory-ordered, which protects the sheet metal exactly where road salt and gravel do the most damage.


Exterior design and style

The Sport is a Canadian-market trim, and its monochromatic treatment is what gives it presence. On this Bright White unit, the bumpers, grille and door handles carry the body colour rather than chrome, which reads as one continuous truck, more modern and far less demanding to keep clean than a chrome bumper.

The 20-inch aluminium wheels on 275/55R20 tires fill the arches without the excess of 22s, a compromise you will appreciate over spring potholes and at replacement time. For the rest, a 153.5 in. (3,898 mm) wheelbase and 241.8 in. (6,142 mm) overall length. The 48.7 ft. (14.84 m) turning circle is the honest price of the long box, and it is the only real trade-off in this configuration.


Comfort and life on board

The front seats are heated and ventilated leather-trimmed buckets, a factory-billed option that also brings 8-way power adjustment for both driver and passenger. Ventilated seats are the kind of feature you think is unnecessary until the first heat wave spent in a truck. The cabin is black with black seats, a combination that ages well and forgives hard use.

The RAM 1500 Crew Cab offers the most rear legroom in the class at 45.2 in. (1,147 mm). Two adults do not negotiate for space back there, and a rear-facing child seat fits without pushing the front seat forward. The power-adjustable pedals let shorter drivers move the seat back without losing contact with the pedals, a rare detail that matters on a truck this size. Remote start, second-row in-floor storage bins and the under-seat rear storage compartment round out the factory-ordered equipment group.


Technology and connectivity

The 12-inch portrait Uconnect touchscreen is standard on the Sport, and it is still one of the best systems in the industry. Built-in navigation, split-screen display and embedded connectivity. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are confirmed on this unit, and the 10-speaker Premium sound system is a clear step above the six-speaker setup found in entry-level trims.

The ParkView rear backup camera shows dynamic gridlines that follow the steering angle, which makes hitching up alone much easier, and front and rear ParkSense warns you and then brakes if an obstacle appears during a slow manoeuvre.


Safety

Forward Collision Mitigation with automatic emergency braking is standard on the Sport, backed by full-speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus, electronic stability control, traction control, electronic roll mitigation, hill start assist and brake assist. Passive protection includes six airbags, with side curtains covering both rows.

What does the eTorque system actually do?
It is a 12 kW belt-starter generator tied to a 48-volt lithium-ion battery. It replaces the conventional alternator and adds up to 130 lb-ft of torque during the first fractions of a second of acceleration. You are not driving a hybrid, you are driving a HEMI V8 that restarts more smoothly and uses a little less fuel in town. The system requires no special maintenance.

Is the 5.7L HEMI V8 reliable long term?
It is an engine built in the millions since 2003, with a simple pushrod architecture and a cast-iron block. It goes well past 300,000 km when oil changes are done at the prescribed intervals. The known watch points are the hydraulic lifters and the cylinder deactivation system, both of which our certified Stellantis shop checks during pre-delivery inspection. At 66,064 km, this engine is at the start of its useful life.

What fuel should it run on?
Stellantis recommends mid-grade 89 octane for this engine and states that regular 87 octane is acceptable. You can run regular day to day without harm, and 89 becomes the logical choice when towing heavy in hot weather. No premium fuel is required.

How much original warranty is left?
The truck was put into service on August 17, 2023. The 3-year or 60,000 km basic warranty has expired on time, as have the adjustment and federal emissions warranties. The 5-year or 100,000 km powertrain warranty, however, remains active until August 17, 2028, with roughly 33,900 km of coverage left, and it transfers to the next owner at no cost for Canadian residents. The corrosion warranty and the major emissions component warranty are also active.

Is this RAM well suited to Quebec winters?
Yes, and for a specific reason. Its on-demand transfer case lets you drive in 4WD AUTO permanently, which the part-time 4x4 in base trims cannot do on dry pavement. Add the anti-spin rear differential, heated front seats, hill start assist and remote start, and you have a truck built to run year round in the Beauce. A dedicated set of winter tires is still recommended on a truck of this weight.
