2024 Ford Expedition Limited Stealth 4x4, the seven-seat full-size SUV that owns its dark side


Some full-size SUVs try to blend in. This one does the opposite. This 2024 Expedition Limited carries the Stealth package, the fully blacked-out treatment of the largest SUV in the Ford lineup, applied over white paint that makes every dark detail pop. Under the hood, a twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6, a 10-speed automatic and a two-speed 4x4 system. Inside, seven leather seats, a panoramic roof and red stitching that tells you right away this is no ordinary Expedition. With 53,684 km on the odometer and a hitch already installed, it is ready to go back to work.


Powertrain and driving

The 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is the centrepiece of this Expedition. Two turbochargers, direct injection, 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. The number that really matters here is the torque, and above all the engine speed where it arrives: peak pull is on tap from 2,250 rpm. In practice, an SUV weighing more than 5,600 lb merges onto Route 73 without the engine having to scream about it.

The 10-speed automatic does its work quietly. The close-ratio lower gears handle launch and traction, the tall upper gears keep engine speed very low on the highway, which explains much of the highway fuel rating. Tow/Haul mode changes the shift strategy when a trailer is hooked up.

The 4x4 system includes a two-speed transfer case with low range. This is not a simple all-wheel-drive setup that sends torque rearward when things get slippery, it is a genuine four-wheel-drive system, with a low range for situations that call for gear reduction rather than speed: a boat launch ramp, an unplowed cottage driveway, a soaked campsite. The console selector moves between 2H, 4A, 4H and 4L. The Stealth package sport-tuned suspension limits body roll without turning the Expedition into a harsh vehicle.


Towing capability and versatility

The Expedition is built on a ladder frame with independent rear suspension. That architecture, borrowed from the pickup world, is what lets it tow up to 9,200 lb (4,173 kg) depending on configuration and towing equipment.

This vehicle carries the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package and the hitch is already installed. The trailer brake controller is integrated into the centre console, which means you meter trailer braking from the driver's seat rather than through a box added after the fact. The Pro Trailer Backup Assist knob changes everything when reversing: turn it in the direction you want the trailer to go and the vehicle handles the steering itself.

On the cargo side, volume goes from 20.9 cu ft (593 L) behind the third row to 104.6 cu ft (2,962 L) with both rear rows folded. The power-folding third row lays flat, giving you one continuous usable floor.

The Stealth package is not just a set of black badges. It touches nearly everything that would be chrome or bright on a regular Expedition.

Comfort and life on board

Seven seats: two buckets up front, two captain's chairs in the second row and a bench in the third. This is the layout most families end up preferring, because it creates a centre aisle to the third row. No more moving a child seat to let someone climb in back.

The seats are perforated black leather with the red stitching specific to the Stealth package, repeated on the steering wheel, dashboard, door panels and console. Front seats are heated and ventilated, power-adjustable, with driver memory. The steering wheel is heated. The panoramic roof spans the first two rows, with a power-opening panel and a powered shade: in a vehicle this size the effect on interior brightness is real, especially in winter when daylight is in short supply.

The third row deserves a mention. In many SUVs it is a backup seat. Here, thanks to the independent rear suspension that lowers the floor, an adult can ride to Quebec City in it without suffering.


Technology and connectivity

The 15.5" portrait touchscreen dominates the dashboard. It runs SYNC 4A, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and receives over-the-air updates. The 12.4" digital instrument cluster changes its display according to the selected drive mode.

The 12-speaker B&O Sound System by Bang and Olufsen comes with the Limited series. Add the wireless phone charging pad, USB ports across all three rows, the 110-volt outlet and the hands-free power liftgate.

What is the difference between the Stealth package and the Stealth Performance package?
The two look alike from the outside, so the question comes up often. The Stealth package, the one fitted here, is an appearance and handling package: 22" black wheels, blacked-out exterior trim, sport-tuned suspension, red stitching and a 360-degree camera. The Stealth Performance package adds the 440-horsepower high-output V6, red brake calipers and a 22-speaker sound system. This vehicle has the 400-horsepower engine.

What is the real-world fuel consumption?
Official Canadian ratings are 14.8 L/100 km city, 10.6 L/100 km highway and 12.9 L/100 km combined. The highway rating is realistic on a steady run, thanks to the tall gears in the 10-speed. In winter city driving, expect to exceed the city rating: that is the reality of any full-size body-on-frame SUV. The engine runs on regular fuel.

How much can it tow and is it already equipped?
Capacity reaches 9,200 lb (4,173 kg) depending on configuration and equipment. This vehicle has the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, the hitch is in place, the brake controller is integrated and Pro Trailer Backup Assist is functional. A weight-distributing hitch is still recommended above 6,000 lb (2,700 kg). For a travel trailer, a good-sized boat or an enclosed trailer, the margin is comfortable.

How does it handle winter in the Beauce region?
The 4x4 system with two-speed transfer case, traction control and electronic stability control form a solid base. The 4A position automatically manages torque split on changing surfaces, which makes it the most useful mode from November to April. Heated seats, heated steering wheel and heated mirrors take care of the rest. As always, four quality winter tires remain the deciding factor.

Is the 3.5L EcoBoost reliable over the long haul?
This second-generation V6 has been in service since 2017 in the F-150, Expedition and Navigator, making it one of the most widespread turbocharged engines in North America. Its longevity depends directly on maintenance discipline: synthetic oil changes on schedule, spark plugs replaced on time and a cooling system in good condition.
