This ProMaster 3500 High Roof Extended, 159-inch wheelbase, offers 524 cu. ft. (14.8 cu. m) of cargo space and 77 in. (1,956 mm) of interior height. Cargo space, the real reason to buy this configuration

Let us start with the number that decides the purchase. This configuration, the largest cargo van offered before stepping up to the super high roof, delivers 524 cu. ft. (14.8 cu. m) of load volume, against 468.9 cu. ft. (13.3 cu. m) for the same 159-inch wheelbase in the non-extended body. The extension is worth roughly 55 cu. ft., about one more pallet.

The load floor measures 161.5 in. (4,102 mm), long enough for 12-foot pipe and ladders inside with the doors closed. Between the wheel housings you get 56 in. (1,422 mm), so a 4-foot sheet of plywood or drywall lies flat. And 77 in. (1,956 mm) of interior height lets a six-foot adult work standing up, which on a February jobsite translates into billable hours.

The rear opening is 61.5 in. (1,562 mm) wide and the sliding side door opening is 42.3 in. (1,074 mm). More importantly, the load floor sits just 21 in. (533 mm) off the ground, the lowest in the class according to Ram, which is the height of an ordinary step. You roll a hand truck in without a ramp, and you climb in and out fifty times a day without hauling yourself up.


The upfit is already started

This is where this unit separates itself from the base vans you usually see on the used market: it was factory-ordered with the protection most buyers add afterwards, often poorly.

The bulkhead partition with sliding window separates the cab from the cargo area. It keeps the load from joining you under emergency braking, it holds the cabin heat instead of losing it into 14.8 cu. m of cold air, and it cuts a good share of the noise, while keeping the rear access a solid partition takes away.

The Mopar cargo floor mat covers the floor and the Mopar side panels protect the walls over their full height, not just the lower section. LED cargo area lighting was factory-installed, which matters when you are hunting for a fitting at five in the afternoon in November. Finally, body interface connectors are built in, so an installer can wire an upfit, a beacon or an inverter without butchering the factory harness. A van whose wiring was never improvised is worth more at resale.


Powertrain, transmission and front-wheel drive

The 3.6L Pentastar V6 with variable valve timing makes 276 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. (339 N·m) of torque at 4,400 rpm on regular 87 octane fuel. It is the engine found across much of the Stellantis lineup since 2011, which means parts everywhere and technicians, ours included, who know it by heart. It is paired with the TorqueFlite 948TE nine-speed automatic, a class exclusive according to Stellantis, which keeps the engine in its torque band when you climb loaded and drops the revs on the highway when you run empty.

The truly distinctive part is the drivetrain. The ProMaster is front-wheel drive, a class exclusive among full-size vans in North America, with two direct consequences. With no driveshaft or rear differential under the floor, the body sits lower, which is where the 21-inch load height comes from. And the engine's weight rides over the driven wheels, so an empty ProMaster on a snowy hill does not spin the way an empty rear-drive van does. For a Chaudière-Appalaches business running from December to March, that is a work day that starts on time.

The 46.8 ft. (14.3 m) turning circle is short for a 250.6 in. (6,365 mm) vehicle. You turn around on a residential street and back up to a dock without the five-point manoeuvre a rear-drive van of the same length demands.


Payload, weight ratings and towing

Gross vehicle weight rating is 9,350 lb (4,241 kg) and gross combined weight rating is 12,000 lb (5,443 kg). The 3500 is the heaviest-duty of the three ProMaster ratings, the one you pick for dense loads: tools, parts, plumbing supplies, materials.

An honest word on payload. It varies with the equipment fitted to each unit, and the only figure that governs is the one stamped on the manufacturer's plate in the driver's door frame. We will read it with you at the vehicle rather than quote you a brochure number. On towing, the chassis is rated up to 6,910 lb (3,134 kg) when properly equipped, but this unit has no factory hitch. Driving position and life on board

Two seats, a driver bucket and a passenger bucket with four manual adjustments, trimmed in black vinyl. Vinyl is a deliberate choice on a work van: it wipes clean with a damp cloth, it does not hold odours, and it does not tear when you sit down wearing a tool belt. Push-button start, an electric parking brake, air conditioning, remote keyless entry and power windows are all part of the package.

The mirrors deserve a mention, because on a van with no rear window they are your only field of view. Heated, they clear themselves while you sweep the windshield. Power folding, they survive tight alleys and commercial garage entrances. They also carry auxiliary convex sections.


Technology and connectivity

Uconnect 5 runs on a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which settles the navigation question on its own: your usual app, with your customer addresses, appears on the screen. SiriusXM satellite radio, hands-free calling and steering-wheel audio controls round out the setup.

To be precise and avoid disappointment, this is the 7-inch screen, not the larger 10.1-inch unit with built-in navigation found on other vehicles. The ParkView rear backup camera is very much there, and on a van with no rear glass that is safety equipment, not a gadget.


Safety and driver assistance

Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus and emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection are standard. On a vehicle that spends its days making urban deliveries, pedestrian and cyclist detection is the single most relevant aid there is.

Crosswind Assist is worth a pause. A 102.5 in. (2,604 mm) high roof gives the wind a lot to push on, and the system corrects the line with selective braking when a gust shoves the van sideways. On Route 73, on bridges, or across open fields in November, you will feel it working. Add drowsy driver detection, traffic sign recognition, electronic roll mitigation, trailer sway control, stability control, all-speed traction control, hill start assist and the brake lock differential, which sends torque to the front wheel with grip when the other one spins.

Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is also fitted. It holds the gap to the vehicle ahead, slows to a complete stop in traffic and pulls away again. It is rare on a used cargo van, and it is what changes fatigue the most when you cover Quebec City, Lévis and Saint-Georges in the same day.

For the sake of transparency, here is what this van does not have: no surround view camera, no blind-spot monitoring, no lane keep assist, no park sensors, no heated seats, no second sliding door on the driver side. It is a V6 built in the millions since 2011 across much of the Stellantis lineup. Its architecture is conventional, with no turbo and no high-pressure direct injection, which limits the number of expensive parts. What is the fuel consumption?
There is no official rating for this vehicle, and we are not going to invent one. The fuel consumption rating programs, EnerGuide in Canada and the EPA in the United States, do not cover vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating above 8,500 lb (3,856 kg), and this ProMaster is rated at 9,350 lb. Real consumption depends mostly on load, route and season, and the 90-litre tank gives a comfortable working range over a regional day.
