The Dodge Challenger holds a special place in the Quebec used-car market, and for a reason many buyers never realize: it was built right here in Canada. Now that production has ended, the used market is the only way to get one. At Daniel Paré Dodge Chrysler, few vehicles generate as many questions from buyers in Lévis, Quebec City, Beauce and Bellechasse, largely because the lineup covered an unusually wide range of trims and engines. Here is what you need to know to tell them apart.
This is the most striking fact about the Challenger's recent history, and the one most often overlooked. Every car of this generation was built at the Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, and the manufacturer's own specification sheets list Brampton, Ontario, Canada as the assembly location. The quintessential American muscle car was, in practice, a Canadian-built car.
Production wrapped up at Brampton on December 22, 2023, and the very last unit down the line was a black SRT Demon 170.
The 2023 model year is the Challenger's last in this form. To mark the end of the run, Dodge released a series of commemorative special editions called Last Call, seven models split between the Challenger and the Charger. On the Challenger side that includes the Shakedown, the Scat Pack Swinger, the Black Ghost and the SRT Demon 170, which was announced as the seventh and final one. Stellantis Canada opened ordering for the Demon 170 in this market.
This is the single most useful piece of information in this article for a local buyer. The Challenger really was offered with all-wheel drive in Canada. The first to get it was the GT AWD, introduced for the 2017 model year. A second all-wheel-drive trim, the SXT AWD, joined for 2019. From that point through the final 2023 model year, the Canadian catalogue included two all-wheel-drive trims: SXT AWD and GT AWD.
Two points are essential here. First, all-wheel drive was only ever paired with the 3.6-litre V6, never with a V8. Second, AWD models came exclusively with the eight-speed automatic. The system uses an active transfer case with front-axle disconnect, letting the car run in rear-wheel drive when traction allows and calling on the front axle when conditions demand it.
The practical result is a genuine character car you can actually drive twelve months a year on our roads. Worth remembering: in Quebec, four compliant winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15, and it is that combination of proper rubber and all-wheel drive that makes the difference in January.
At the base sits the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, found in SXT and GT trims. It is rated at 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft through most of the period, and 303 horsepower with the same torque on the final model years. It is the only engine compatible with all-wheel drive.
Next comes the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 in the R/T: 372 horsepower and 400 lb-ft with the automatic, 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft with the manual. Above that, the 6.4-litre HEMI V8, better known as the 392, powers the Scat Pack and SRT 392 with 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft, the peak of the naturally aspirated engines.
The next step up is the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 in the SRT Hellcat: 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft through the 2018 model year, then 717 horsepower and 656 lb-ft from 2019 onward. That same year brought the SRT Hellcat Redeye and its high-output version of the engine, rated at 797 horsepower and 707 lb-ft. The SRT Super Stock pushes the same block to 807 horsepower with identical torque.
Two extreme versions close things out. The 2018 SRT Demon is rated at up to 840 horsepower and 770 lb-ft on high-octane fuel. The 2023 SRT Demon 170, the last of the line, reaches 1,025 horsepower and 945 lb-ft on E85 ethanol.
The six-speed Tremec manual stayed on the order sheet through the final 2023 model year. According to the Canadian specification sheet for that year, it was optional on the 5.7-litre R/T, the 6.4-litre Scat Pack 392 and the supercharged SRT Hellcat. It never existed on the six-cylinder cars or on any all-wheel-drive trim. If you want three pedals, you are shopping for a rear-drive V8 Challenger.
The 2016 lineup included the SXT, SXT Plus, R/T, R/T Shaker, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat, all rear-wheel drive. The GT AWD arrived for 2017 and the SXT AWD for 2019, after which the range settled into nine models: SXT, SXT AWD, GT, GT AWD, R/T, Scat Pack 392, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Redeye and SRT Super Stock.
The widened bodywork, known simply as the Widebody, appeared for 2018 on the SRT Hellcat, spread to the R/T Scat Pack for 2019, and later to the SRT Hellcat Redeye. It adds 3.5 inches of width through fender flares, along with 20-by-11-inch forged wheels, larger Brembo brakes and revised suspension. Jailbreak variants round out the picture, unlocking colour and option combinations that were otherwise restricted.
The screen is a quick way to date any given car. On 2016 and 2017 models, the cabin has a Uconnect touchscreen measuring either 5 or 8.4 inches, with no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Both arrive with the 2018 model year, alongside the Uconnect 4 system with a 7-inch screen as standard and an 8.4-inch screen optional, plus a 7-inch colour display in the instrument cluster.
On the driver-assistance side, the final model year's specification sheet cites more than 70 available safety and security features, including forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross path detection. Content varies from one option group to the next, and we confirm the exact list on every unit.
Despite having only two doors, the Challenger is rated for five occupants, with two seats up front and a three-place rear bench. Trunk space is 459 litres, or 16.2 cubic feet, an uncommon figure in this segment.
No. The 2023 model year was the last, and production ended on December 22, 2023 at the Brampton plant.
At the Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, as confirmed by the manufacturer's specification sheets. Every version, from the V6 to the Demon 170, came out of that plant.
The GT AWD arrived for 2017 and the SXT AWD for 2019. Both stayed in the Canadian lineup through the final 2023 model year.
Only the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, paired with the eight-speed automatic. All-wheel drive was never offered with a V8.
That is precisely what makes it a twelve-month car. The active transfer case brings the front wheels into play as soon as traction drops off.
The 3.6-litre V6, the 5.7 and 6.4-litre HEMI V8s, the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 in the SRT Hellcat, Hellcat Redeye and Super Stock, plus the SRT Demon and SRT Demon 170.
The R/T uses the 5.7-litre HEMI V8, rated at 372 horsepower and 400 lb-ft with the automatic or 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft with the manual. The Scat Pack uses the 6.4-litre HEMI V8, rated at 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft.
Yes, but only on rear-drive V8 models. The six-speed Tremec manual was offered through the 2023 model year on the R/T, Scat Pack 392 and SRT Hellcat.
The 2018 model year, with the Uconnect 4 system and its standard 7-inch or optional 8.4-inch screen. The 2016 and 2017 cars did not have it from the factory.
It is the widened bodywork, adding 3.5 inches through fender flares, with 20-by-11-inch forged wheels and larger Brembo brakes. It debuted on the 2018 SRT Hellcat and spread to the R/T Scat Pack for 2019.
Seven commemorative models released to mark the end of the run, split between the Challenger and the Charger. On the Challenger side they include the Shakedown, the Scat Pack Swinger, the Black Ghost and the SRT Demon 170.
