Used Jeep Grand Cherokee L for sale near Lévis and Quebec City

The Grand Cherokee L is the Grand Cherokee with a third row and real cargo space behind it. Families from Lévis, Quebec City, Beauce and Bellechasse ask us about it constantly. Buying one used takes homework, because the L changed year by year and one model year is easy to misread.

Why model year 2021 needs a closer look

The Grand Cherokee L launched for 2021, a full year ahead of the redesigned five seat Grand Cherokee, which arrived for 2022. It is built at the Detroit Assembly Complex, Mack plant, in Detroit, Michigan, a new factory opened specifically for it. First Canadian deliveries came in the second and third quarters of 2021.

For 2021, Jeep sold two vehicles at once under almost the same name: the brand new three row Grand Cherokee L, and the five seat Grand Cherokee, still the previous generation carried over almost unchanged. The two have nothing in common: platform, chassis, interior, screens and driver assistance all differ. That year, the letter L is the only reliable sign of the new generation.

What separates the L from the five seat Grand Cherokee

The wheelbase measures 3,091 mm versus 2,964 mm, or 127 mm longer, and overall length 5,204 mm versus 4,914 mm, or 290 mm longer. Worth noting: more than half of the stretch sits in the rear overhang, which is what creates usable space behind the third row. Cargo volume is 17.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 46.9 behind the second and 84.6 behind the front seats, against 37.7 and 70.8 for the five seater. Second row legroom is 1,000 mm, with 180 mm of seat travel.

Now the honest part: the third row has 770 mm of legroom, 15 mm of knee clearance, 947 mm of headroom, 1,317 mm of shoulder room. Legroom is competitive for the class, but the knee clearance figure tells the real story. It suits children, teenagers or adults on short trips, not two adults on a long highway run. The real payoff of the long body is the cargo space behind them. Two layouts were offered: six seats with captain's chairs, or seven with a 60/40 bench.

    Engines from 2021 through 2026

The 3.6 litre Pentastar V6, 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft, is the base engine from 2021 through 2026. The 5.7 litre HEMI V8, 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft, was only ever paired with four wheel drive, and it stayed in the L lineup through 2024, roughly a year longer than in the five seater, where it was dropped during 2023. There is no V8 on the L from 2025 onward.

The 2.0 litre turbocharged Hurricane four cylinder, 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft, is new for 2026 and offered on the L. It uses turbulent jet ignition and a variable geometry turbocharger, with 90 percent of peak torque between 2,600 and 5,600 rpm. The V6 then continues on the L Laredo and L Laredo X, while the Hurricane is standard above them.

To settle a frequent question: there has never been a Grand Cherokee L 4xe plug-in hybrid, in any model year, in Canada or anywhere in North America. The 4xe existed only on the five seater, so a plug-in hybrid with seven seats does not exist. Every L uses the eight speed TorqueFlite automatic.

Towing, and the trims sold in Canada

The V6 is rated at 2,812 kg, or 6,200 lb, when properly equipped. The V8, four wheel drive only, is rated at 3,265 kg, or 7,200 lb, and the 2026 Hurricane at 6,200 lb. One common assumption needs correcting: with the same engine, the L tows exactly what the five seater tows. We confirm the exact rating of each vehicle.

The Canadian lineup ran Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve from 2021 through 2025. For 2026 it is simplified: Laredo X, Limited Reserve and an 85th Anniversary edition join, while Overland and Summit Reserve are dropped. Overland was the only trim to offer the V8 from 2021 through 2023, before it spread to Summit and Summit Reserve for 2024. Every L sold new in Canada is four wheel drive as standard; rear wheel drive versions exist in the United States only.

How the technology changed, year by year

This is where similar looking examples differ most. From launch in 2021: Uconnect 5 with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, five user profiles, a Wi-Fi hotspot, over the air updates, a frameless 10.25 inch digital cluster, a colour head-up display up to a 10 inch image diagonal from the Overland up, and a 9.2 inch digital rearview mirror. The centre touchscreen measured 8.4 or 10.1 inches through 2025, then 12.3 inches for 2026 on upper trims, 8.4 remaining on the L Laredo.

Two very visible features are missing from 2021 vehicles. The 10.25 inch front passenger screen arrived for 2022: the passenger handles navigation, cameras and video, with a filter that makes it unreadable from the driver's seat. The rear entertainment screens arrived for 2022 as well, two 10.1 inch displays on the front seatbacks with Amazon Fire TV built in, 16 gigabytes of storage each for offline content, plus voice remotes. A 2021 L cannot have them.

The FamCam interior camera, on the other hand, has been available since the 2021 launch, from the Limited trim up. Mounted in the headliner between the second and third rows, it offers a split view and seat by seat zoom, including on a rear facing child seat, a feature tied to three row layouts. Also since 2021: a nine speaker Alpine system of roughly 506 watts, the McIntosh MX950 with 19 speakers and 950 watts, and 12 Type-A and Type-C USB ports.

    Driver assistance

Since 2021 the L has advertised more than 110 standard and available safety features: full speed forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross path detection, level 2 Active Driving Assist, infrared night vision from the Overland up and a 360 degree camera from the Limited up.

Hands free driving is a different story. It does not exist on 2021, 2022 or 2023 examples. It arrives for 2024, on four wheel drive Overland and Summit trims, and only with the V6. It works on pre-mapped roads, so ask about coverage on your usual routes.

    Four wheel drive and suspension

Quadra-Trac I is a single speed full time system with no low range. Quadra-Trac II adds a 2.72:1 low range from the Limited up. Quadra-Drive II adds an electronic limited slip rear differential, standard on Summit and available on Overland with the off-road package. A front axle disconnect is standard on all four wheel drive models.

Quadra-Lift air suspension has been available since 2021 on Overland and Summit: five ride heights across 106 mm of travel, maximum ground clearance of 276 mm against 215 mm on steel springs, 610 mm of fording depth and adaptive damping. Its entry and exit mode lowers the door sill, useful when loading kids into the third row. Selec-Terrain offers five modes: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Mud or Sand. Suspension is independent multi-link front and rear.

Our Chaudière-Appalaches and Capitale-Nationale customers want exactly this: a large family SUV that can pull a trailer or a boat and stays composed in winter thanks to standard four wheel drive. In Quebec, four compliant winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15.

Seven things to know before buying a used Grand Cherokee L

    1. For 2021, the letter L is the only reliable indicator of the new generation.
    2. The third row has only 15 mm of knee clearance, best for children, teenagers or short trips.
    3. The long body's real benefit is 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row.
    4. The V8 stayed available through 2024, four wheel drive only, and disappears from 2025.
    5. The front passenger screen and the Fire TV rear screens do not exist on 2021 vehicles.
    6. Hands free driving only appears for 2024, on Overland and Summit, and only with the V6.
    7. There is no plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee L 4xe in any model year.

Frequently asked questions about the used Jeep Grand Cherokee L

What is the difference between the Grand Cherokee L and the Grand Cherokee?

The L is the three row version: 5,204 mm long versus 4,914 mm, wheelbase stretched by 127 mm, six or seven seats and 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row.

How do I tell a 2021 Grand Cherokee L from the older generation?

For 2021, Jeep sold the new generation L alongside the previous generation five seater. The letter L is the only reliable indicator.

    Is there a plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee L 4xe?

No, in any model year, in Canada or anywhere in North America. The 4xe was only offered on the five seater.

Can adults sit in the third row?

770 mm of legroom, 947 mm of headroom, but only 15 mm of knee clearance: best for children, teenagers or short trips.

What was the last year for the V8 on the Grand Cherokee L?

The 2024 model year, roughly a year longer than on the five seater, where the HEMI was dropped during 2023.

Which engines can I find in a used Grand Cherokee L?

The 3.6 litre V6 from 2021 through 2026, the 5.7 litre V8 through 2024, and the 2.0 litre Hurricane for 2026, all with the eight speed automatic.

Which years have the passenger screen and the rear screens?

Both arrived for 2022. Neither the 10.25 inch passenger display nor the rear screens with Amazon Fire TV were available on 2021 vehicles.

    What is the FamCam camera?

A high definition camera in the headliner between the second and third rows, available since 2021 from the Limited up, with seat by seat zoom.

How much can a Grand Cherokee L tow?

Up to 2,812 kg, or 6,200 lb, with the V6, and 3,265 kg, or 7,200 lb, with the four wheel drive V8.

Does the L tow less than the five seater because it is longer?

No. With the same engine, both body styles carry the same rating, which surprises many buyers.

Can a used Grand Cherokee L be rear wheel drive?

Not if it was sold new in Canada. Every trim offered here is four wheel drive as standard, so it would be imported.

Can you service my Grand Cherokee L and take my current vehicle in trade?

Yes to both. Our Sainte-Marie and Saint-Malachie service departments have factory trained technicians and genuine Mopar parts, and a trade-in of any brand can reduce the amount subject to Quebec sales tax.
